November Meeting!!

Our November meeting is only a week away!  Do you have some projects ready for show and tell?

Last month we had quite a bit of information shared.  Jessie shared her experience at Sewing Summit! Someday I would love to have the opportunity to participate in a modern sewing conference, especially after seeing all of the fun Jessie had while she was there!

We also introduced our next challenge.  Bettepat organized a Pantone Color of the Year Challenge!  She had emerald colored squares for participants to take and instructions on how to make a wonky log cabin block.  This challenge is open for any member to participate.  So if you grabbed some emerald squares make sure you bring some completed wonky blocks back with you to the November meeting!!

The One Yard Rip Off has been a huge success!  We decided to continue the OYRO again at the November meeting.  If you want to participate, bring a yard of Christmas fabric to rip!  And if you participated in last month's OYRO, don't forget to bring back your finished project from the solids you collected!

Our presentation at the November meeting will be on last minute Christmas gift ideas.  But this is a group presentation!!!  So make sure you bring some ideas with you!  The more ideas we bring the better the presentation will be!!

Bettepat has scheduled a special Show and Tell this month!  Everyone needs to bring their best or first quilt for show and tell.  If it's not in your possession you can always bring a picture!  So hopefully we will see some beautiful quilts at this month's meeting!  I know I am quilting away trying to finish a work in progress.  And of course, bring all of your non-quilt finishes this month as well.

So just to recap, as you are getting ready for next weeks meeting, make sure you gather these things to bring:

1. Alberta's Hope Blocks - Community Service Project
2. Show and Tell - Bring your first quilt or your best quilt for show and tell.
3. 1 yard of Christmas fabric for the One Yard Rip Off this month.
4. A completed project from last month's One Yard Rip Off.  (Made from solids.)
5. Ideas and examples for Last Minute Christmas Gift Ideas.
6. Pantone Color of the Year Challenge (Log Cabin Blocks)

We can't wait to see you all next week at the meeting.

A bloglovin' tutorial!

Blogging was our presentation this month so for those of you who missed it I put together a tutorial over some of the things that we talked about!  I found a great tutorial that lays out how to start a bloglovin' account here.  She will walk you through step by step how to set up your account.

Once your account is made you will be able to access your main page.  Below is a snapshot of the main page. Once you’ve created an account you can search for and follow your favorite blogs, categorize them however you like and read all unread posts either by date posted, category or blog name. One feature I like is being able to scroll through snapshots of posts from the main page.

Once a post is clicked on, another window will open the post with a nifty scroll bar at the top. From here you can move on to the next unread post by clicking “newer”, “older” or “oldest.”

Finding blogs is part of the fun!  But here is a list of great modern quilting blogs to get you started!  You can also see our member blogs on the side bar to the right.
Once you start following blogs, bloglovin' will email you daily with your daily feed!  It's a great reminder to take a few minutes to scroll through the days posts!
There's also an app that you can download on your phone so you can read your favorite blogs on the go!

A Great Meeting with Great People!

I am loving how our group is coming together.  As of the third meeting last night, we have 22 members!  We have such talented ladies in our guild and I am so impressed and inspired by all of their strengths!  Last night we presented our baskets.  You can see all of the pics in the McKinney Modern Quilt Guild flickr group, but I will highlight just a few here on the blog.  Every single basket was fantastic and I could tell that our members put their best work into this swap.

Bettepat made a beautiful grey basket with a pink lining for Sarah H.!  It was stuffed full of things even a mini basket.  I wonder how many fat quarters would fit in there?!

Stephanie's partner really wanted baskets that she could use in her kitchen.  So Stephanie made some utensil trays!  How perfect would those be for a 4th of July party!  I might need to put that project on my to-do list.  I don't know if this is the pattern that Stephanie used but here is a link for a tutorial that looks very similar!

We also discussed blogging and the benefits of following some of the amazing blogs that are out there.  I will work on getting a tutorial put together on how to set up a bloglovin' account as well as a list of some popular modern sewing blogs.

Our "Show and Tell" was also pretty amazing.  I have several projects that I have added to my to-do list after last night.  The first one that I would love to work on this summer is an Amy Butler pattern.  Jessie brought her Birdie Sling to show off and it was gorgeous!
She used a vintage sheet for the main part of her bag.  It makes me want to go vintage sheet hunting!  Sara M. mentioned that The Salvation Army in Sherman is a great place to find vintage sheets!  I might have to stop by there this week!

Sarah H. also brought a pillow cover and two mini quilts to share.  We might be using the wonky cross pattern for our first community service project!  Julie will be rolling out the details about that at the August meeting!
There are tons of great projects from "Show and Tell" that you won't want to miss seeing, you can check those out in the flickr group.

We presented our new swap last night!  The Low Volume Charm Swap!

For those of you who missed the meeting we also introduced the low volume charm swap.  If you are interested in signing up, just email mckinneymodernquiltguild@gmail(dot)com.  You must sign up and be a member to participate.

Here are the deatils:
1. Purchase 2 different low volume prints (1 yard of each).

2. Post pics of the fabrics you purchase in the MMQG flickr group to make sure that we don't have any duplicates.

3. Cut 56 - 5" charm squares from each yard of fabric I would use Elizabeth Hartman's tutorial, which you can find here.

4. Sort fabrics according to the directions in the flickr group.

5. Bring the charm squares to the August meeting and we will sort and get the charm squares back to you that night.

Just in case you need a good explination of low volume you can check out this Moda blog post.

Are you ready for the July meeting?

Hello ladies!  The July meeting is just a few days away!  Hopefully your fabric baskets are coming together as you have planned them!  I was able to see what Bettepat is working on and it's looking amazing.  I can't wait to see what you all bring to the meeting.  Remember, if you are unable to make the meeting, please make arrangements so that your fabric basket is present at the meeting!

Here's a quick outline of the agenda for Tuesday!

1.    Committee Reports
a.    Presentation of Minutes
b.    Treasurer
2.    New Business
a.    Community Service Opportunity – Julie Laidlaw
b.    Present our Fabric Basket
c.    Upcoming Low Volume Charm Swap
d.    Program Presentation: Blogging
e.    Name that Fabric Line and Designer Game
f.      Monthly Tool/Notion Demo
g.    Show and Tell
h.    Door Prize
i.      Next Meeting Date August 6th @6:30pm

You will notice that we have a game planned! You might want to brush up on current and upcoming modern fabric lines! There might be a small prize for the winner. I would suggest looking at fabric lines by designers like Anna Maria Horner, Aneela Hoey, Heather Ross, and Lotta Jansdotter just to name a few!

I can't wait to see everyone at the meeting on Tuesday, July 2nd. For those of you who are traveling over the holiday please travel safely and we will see you in August!

Just to recap .... if you are coming to our meeting you need to bring:
1. Your completed fabric basket for your partner.
2. Your modern fabric line knowledge!
3. Show and Tell!!!!!

Have you been sewing????

At our May meeting we presented our first group project.  So have you been working on your name tag?  I know mine is done, and I have seen pics of a couple others floating around on facebook!  There's still time to whip one up!  And whoever comes with a handmade name tag will be entered into a prize drawing for something handmade.  I have been working on that something handmade and am super excited to give it away!

There is only one rule when it comes to the name tags .... it has to be handmade!  The sticky paper name tags don't count!  So be creative and use whatever medium you desire!

Also, don't forget about bringing your scraps for the fabric basket swap!

Here are the guidelines:

1. Bring in a gallon size ziploc bag of scraps/fabric. Let's make sure that the scraps you use are a decent size. You might want to put a fat quarter in the bag for them to use for the lining! Keep in mind the more fabric you bring the more options your partner will have to make something wonderful! There's no need to add batting or interfacing ... your partner will take care of that part.

2. Put your name on the bag.

3. Bring your bag of fabric to the meeting on June 4th.

4. At the June meeting we will swap fabric bags. You will then take your partners bag home and make a fabric basket for them. Keep record of who your partner is!

5. Bring the completed fabric basket back to the July meeting and we will present them to our partners! You can even fill the baskets with a few goodies if you like! I know I plan on it!

So just to recap if you choose to play along, for the June meeting you should bring:
1. A handmade nametag
2. A ziploc bag of fabric scraps for the fabric basket swap
3. Items for Show and Tell!!!

I can't wait to see all of you there!  There are some great things planned for this month!

Fabric Basket Swap and Tutorial Links!

It's time to start prepping for our first swap for the McKinney Modern Quilt Guild!  We have decided that a fabric basket will be a great swap item to start with.  Below I have listed quite a few pictures.  If you click on the picture it will take you directly to the tutorial!  Here are the details:

1. Bring in a quart or gallon size ziploc bag of scraps/fabric.  You might want to put a fat quarter in the bag for them to use for the lining!  Keep in mind the more fabric you bring the more options your partner will have to make something wonderful!

2. Put your name on the bag.

3. Bring your bag of fabric to the meeting on June 4th.

Thank You!

Out first meeting was last night and I know I wasn't the only one surprised by the turnout.  We had 38 amazing ladies come and join us for our first meeting with the McKinney Modern Quilt Guild.  I am so excited to see how this group connects and grows together!

We discussed several things at the meeting, one being the meeting time.  As a group we decided moving the start time back to 6:30pm would be best for the majority of schedules.  So from now on we will start at 6:30!

This first meeting was used to introduce the ladies to the Modern Quilt Guild movement.  I highlighted several benefits of being affiliated with the National Guild.

Joy, our Vice President, was also able to share a quick notion demonstration!  She introduced our ladies to the Sewline Needle Threader.  For anyone who does hand-stitching, this is a must have notion.

For those of you who missed our first meeting I wanted to let you know about the project for this month.  Whoever brings a handmade name tag to the June meeting (the sticky paper ones don't count), will be entered into a prize drawing.  Here are some examples in case you need a little inspiration.

So, like I said, if you bring in a handmade name tag to the June meeting you will be entered into a special prize drawing! The prize also might be handmade!

Also we prepped our first Challenge!  I will be posting more about that later this week!  So get to work on those name tags and we look forward to seeing you all June 4th @ 6:30pm.

Our First Meeting, Come Join Us!

The first meeting of the McKinney Modern Quilt Guild will be on May 7th at 6:00pm at one of the local quilt shops, Stitched With Love.  We will be introducing officers and beginning our adventure into the Modern Quilting world!  We would love to see some new faces, so come out and get in on the beginning of this adventure!
