September Meeting Minutes 2016

Call to Order

Our September meeting was called to order at 6:30 by our President, Stephanie Schroer.

Committee Reports

Our committee reports will be posted online now.  We want plenty of time to interact, have fun, and show and tell our projects.  See the minutes every month to stay in the loop with the following information:
Membership: 49 present, including 10 guests and 3 new members.

Treasurer: We started with $5015.55, expenses were $0.00 and income was $150.00.  We ended with $5165.55.

Community Service

Community Service Sew Days have commenced!  Join the McKMQG on fifth Fridays of the month from 6-9 pm at Stitched with Love.  We will learn a new modern sewing technique or pattern and create quilts for our charity, Alberta's Hope.  Future dates include: Oct 7, and Dec 30.  Join us on October 7th from 6-9 pm at Stitched with Love!
Dusty also accepts donations of fat quarter's (FQ's) up to completed quilts for our charity at the start of each guild meeting.  At our charity sew days, we mostly use donated orphan fat quarters to make charity quilts - this is a great opportunity for your mystery (i.e. it's a mystery why I bought this) FQ's or half-yards sitting idle in your stash.  You'll be entered in a drawing for a prize with quilt, quilt topor FQ(+) fabric donations.

MCKMQG delivered 3 full size & 1 lap size quilts for #quiltsforpulse and #quiltsforpeace.  Thanks to Melissa Eubanks (@myfabricrelish) and Lynn Farestad for quilting.  Thanks to Christina Lee for binding!

Business

We now have a set-up and tear-down sign-up for individual meetings!  It's a great way to contribute to the guild and socialize without much responsibility.  See the sign-up form to volunteer.  If there's another way you'd like to be involved, there's space for you to enter your ideas as well!

A call was made for nominating committee members to nominate new board members for the coming year.  Volunteers were solicited and the nominating committee will be Sarah H, Joellen, Nelda, and Gail P.

Michael Miller Luxe fabric arrived for the challenge!  Fabric was handed out.

About 25 members completed the 1 yard rip-off for our Pantone Color of the Year challenge.  The challenge will be to use fabrics from the ripoff plus one "helper" color (drawn from paint chip bag) and make something.  Projects should be 80% or more from the challenge fabric & the helper color.  Finished items are due at the November meeting.

We are in the middle of our a new monthly challenge called Modern Mystery Block of the Month, created by Alice Dutton.  Our goal as a modern guild is to create together and continue to learn more about modern quilting techniques -- this should help expand your arsenal of quilting skills!  Our Modern Mystery quilt will be revealed one block at a time.  You must attend the meetings (or pick up an extra paper copy at Stitched with Love) to participate.  We will not post pattern instructions online.  Last month's Dresden blocks were on display and a prize was drawn.  New patterns were handed out.  Bring back your completed block next month and you will be entered into a drawing to win a PRIZE.  Leftover patterns not handed out at guild will be left at Stitched with Love, first come first serve.  Once they're gone, they're gone!  If you need help constructing the block, e-mail alicedutton at gmail dot com.   Tag your creations on social media with #modernmysterybom and #mckmqg.
Retreat this winter will be held at Sunset Retreat Center.  Online signup is available.  Deposit will be due to hold your spot & final payment will be due at the December meeting.
Our quilting bee queens collected blocks.  If you want to participate in or join a bee, we have a sign up sheet at the check-in desk.  This month, Allyson's B3 group made Polaroid blocks for Anne and Ellyn's group SewBeeIt made Chris "ripples" blocks.
Triad Modern Quilt Guild and McKinney Modern Quilt Guild hosted a Triad meets McKinney Mini Quilt Swap! Alice led the unwrapping of the minis.  Lots of happy quilters finally got to see what was made especially for them.

Program

Ellyn introduced the program, which was a fun game show night.  Teams were drawn for various games, such as identifying quilt blocks, unscrambling quilty words, and answering questions about modern quilting and the modern quilt guild.  Everyone was a winner!  (There was a Great Bowl of Chocolate to choose candy from!)

In October, Ashley Leon will present a trunk show and discuss quilting tips and techniques with rulers (think triangles, hexagons, etc).  November will host our annual demo night (if you have an idea for a quick holiday gift that could be demonstrated/explained in 5-10 minutes, please contact Ellyn).  In December we will hold our holiday potluck/party and handmade ornament swap.

End of Meeting Fun

Show & tell - lots of lovely creations were shown this month!  As we grow we will continue to ask our members to show their best finishes for the month and discuss why their creation is modern.  Several birthday certificates were handed out.  Door prizes were drawn - Gail Pettigrew, Chris Atwell, Alice Haney, and Martha Fipps won!  Stitched with Love revealed this month's discount.  Join us for our next meeting!

Next Meeting: October 4 @ 6:30, 6:00 social hour
