GUILD MEETING 10/17

CALL TO ORDER

  • President Stephanie Schroer called our meeting to order at 6:31 pm.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

  • Membership: 34 people present, with 2 guests!    
  • Treasurer: This month our report is - Beginning Balance: $6275.40. Revenue: $378.00, Expenses: $29.50 (Retreat deposit & monthly recurring expenses), Ending balance: $6623.90 Please e-mail questions to treasurer.mckmqg at gmail.com.

  • Charity:
    • QuiltCON Charity Quilt - Bonnie has postcards printed up with our charity quilt photo on it and created raffle tickets.  We will sell tickets for $1 each or 6 for $5.  We’re asking every member to sell 10 tickets, which we distributed at this meeting in May.  We’ll also display our quilt at local shops and to other quilt guild meetings to sell tickets.  Our plan for proceeds will be half to the guild and half to Samaritan Inn.  The raffle winner will be drawn at the December meeting.  Whoever sells the most charity tickets will receive a prize!     The quilt is currently at Best of Bernina in Plano.  On October 28, we will be selling tickets outside of Happiness is Quilting.  Please see
    • Quiltcon 2018 charity quilt is in the works!  There will be a sew day, please stay tuned!
    • CASA of Collin County - CASA kids spend a lot of time in court and the local leader of CASA of Collin County, Lori Greer, requested we make activity items for the kids.  We will make crayon/toy car rollups (8 jumbo crayons per box or 8 toy cars), pencil cases (12 colored pencils per box), and notepad cases to help keep kids entertained.  Please take a kit and the instructions will be on the website.  
    • Stitched with Love Quilt Challenge - we are going to donate charity quilts to Lynn to donate to cancer patients.  There are a few tops/backing/binding kits available to take.  

BUSINESS

  • The Nominating Committee is needed for the Board of 2018.  Chris, Charlene, Gayle, Nelda & Bethany have volunteered! Please email your interest to Nelda or the main guild email.
  • MCKMQG is growing up!  We will be looking for a new home starting January 2018.   Stitched With Love has been a wonderful home for us, but they are expanding their business & with great sadness will no longer have the space to host us.  We are excited for their continued expansion and will

 

EVENTS - Community Service, Challenges, Swaps, Retreats, and Bees

  • Bees are in full swing!  You can still join too!  Email mckinneymqg at gmail dot com and we’ll forward to our Bee mama.
  • Retreat in September at Create-A-Way cottage owned by Nelda in Collinsville, TX. Signups will start in June.  Dates are 29Sep-1Oct.  We will collect a $50 deposit, $130 total.  BYOFood.  13 people will be able to participate.  There are 4 spots still available!
  • Sew Inspired Swap - our new swap, due in November!  From fabric & thread, make a decorative item to inspire your swap partner in their sewing space.  We've swapped partners tonight & you have until November to create - this can be a secret swap if you want.
  • Michael Miller Our Yard Challenge - Due November 30, 2017, see here for details.  
  • We will have a mini-day retreat on October 21-22 at the Best Little Quilt Shop in Texas, located at Coit & Beltline.  Please sign up on the website: http://bestlittleretreatcenterintexas.com/
  • Dresden Swap Challenge Final Reveal THIS MONTH!!  The final projects were shown off and we drew 3 prizes for completions.  This was a long term swap project, we made 6-12 Dresden plates to swap - any size, any number of plates to create the whole circle, any color scheme within the theme. Color cards were passed out for reference.  Bella solids colors as inspiration: Petunia, Geranium, Mustard, Marigold, Amelia Blue, Betty’s Red Horizon Blue, Turquoise, Iris, Amelia Green, Kelly

  • October - Member profiles - we continue to get to know some of our fellow members better.  We heard stories behind several guildies creative journeys.  Michelle, Jess, & Bonnie all presented.

  • September - Initial K was unable to come to McKinney this month due to travel concerns and assistance with her parent's cleanup from Hurricane Harvey. Instead, Lynn did a fabulous job arranging an impromptu presentation on long-arming. Lynn & Dianne gave us a fabulous demonstration on the Handiquilter longarms available in the shop.

  • Vice-President of Communications, Martha Cavazos Fipps, called our meeting to order at 6:33pm with some cheesy “hot” jokes.

  • Treasurer: This month our report is - Beginning Balance: $5794.72. Revenue: $862.00 (½ from June that didn’t get deposited until after the 1st of July), Expenses: $48.95, Ending balance: $6607.37.

    • Color theme - Color cards were passed out for reference.  Bella solids colors as inspiration: Petunia, Geranium, Mustard, Marigold, Amelia Blue, Betty’s Red Horizon Blue, Turquoise, Iris, Amelia Green, Kelly
  • Color of the Year Challenge REVEAL!!! - Pantone Greenery (Bella Kelly) & Kona Flamingo are the colors of the year!  Our challenge was to use one of the colors and do something that stretches your boundaries!  4 finishes were shown.

PROGRAM

  • We had no program this month, we instead had a party with quilty games!
  • Upcoming August - Denee Nelson will discuss machine maintenance.
  • Upcoming September - Initial K will be coming to McKinney!

BUSINESS

  • We are in the process of purchasing insurance per our bylaws.  The MQG National has set up appropriate insurance policies for our guild and negotiated a great rate of $299.  This is significantly discounted.
  • July 4th meeting will be moved to July 11th and will be held at Fire Station No 7 in McKinney.  Same time, different place.  We will have a picnic & a party!

Three of our wonderful members gave a presentation about modern applique techniques - Diann Loper, Joellen Brill & Martha Wolf. Back basting, needle turn, & raw edge were demonstrated for us.
